Thanks for watching. Is it time yet? Is it time yet it's time. Welcome back hockey fans to another episode of Royally Quacked, where I'm Royally and he's Quacked. How's it going, cody?
Cody:I'm doing good. How are you doing, Dad?
Gary:Eh, doing okay. Mom's out of town, dog's acting weird, but other than that, you know I'm feeling alright.
Cody:You're surviving over there without Mom.
Gary:Yeah, it's weird.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:It's quiet.
Cody:I'm going to tell mom. You said that. Well it is, of course she's going to end up hearing it anyway.
Gary:But it's been quiet.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:I mean, it's just, you know, tim just left to go to work. You know, about an hour ago or so? No, maybe a little more than an hour ago. About an hour ago or so?
Cody:No, maybe a little more than an hour ago. Okay, all right. Well, I'm excited to start my new job on Monday. Yeah, I bet you are Thursday was my last day, at my last job.
Gary:Well, I knew that.
Cody:Fans, you know it now too. And then we're also a week away from my birthday.
Gary:Yes, you are.
Cody:The big 3-2. At least now everyone knows how old I am now.
Gary:Wasn't a secret anyways, wasn't it? I don't care.
Cody:Of course, people have thought I was 32 for 10 years now.
Gary:No, they thought you were 32 when you were playing Little League. God, he's so big for 10 years now, now they thought you were 32 and you were playing Little League. I remember God, he's so big.
Cody:Christina's mom thought I was 34 because I had that huge lumberjack beard. She thought I was like 34 or 35. And Christina's like no, he's only a year older.
Gary:That's okay. Mom says I act like I'm 12. That's probably the truth.
Cody:That is definitely the truth.
Gary:I resemble that remark.
Cody:Yeah, okay, since I messed up last week, I got a trivia question.
Gary:Oh good.
Cody:Can you give me the top five most or the top five coaches in Kings history that have the best win percentage? Sorry, points percentage.
Gary:Otherwise, percentage of points.
Cody:You know what? No, no, no, we're going to do all-time wins All-time. Because the percentage points is kind of. It's a little more difficult, so we'll do most wins for a Kings coach.
Gary:Wow, Most wins for a Kings coach. I'm trying to think who has longevity? Hmm, I think you should be able to easily get two for sure, two for sure, huh, for sure, I think it should be a no-doubter. Sutter.
Cody:Sutter's number one 225 wins. Yeah, he's number one 225 wins.
Gary:Yeah, he's number one. I thought there might be somebody else that just had more longevity, because I didn't.
Cody:He has 10 more wins than the person that's number two 10 more wins.
Gary:That wouldn't be McClellan, would it?
Cody:McClellan is number four with 164 wins. Barry Melrose mcclellan is number four with 164 wins. Uh, barry melrose. Barry melrose is number nine with 79.
Gary:I think he only coached two seasons there yeah, but he took him to the stanley cup in one of them. They just didn't win it yeah um, oh, let me think that's not something. Um, I, I totally pay attention.
Cody:Think of who um, two of them are within the two since 2000 and on, and the other one is in the. Spent most of the time in the 70s. Spent most of the time in the 70s.
Gary:That should be a big hint. Yeah, I didn't pay attention to coaches as much as I do players. Yeah, it's not my strong point.
Cody:I understand.
Gary:I got number one, so I feel good about that. Yeah, who was the coach in the 2000s Trying to think they had a bunch of them? There was one that got fired before Daryl Sutter took over yeah, and I was trying to think of who that was and my brain just draws a blank. Who did they fire to get rid of?
Cody:sir, I'll tell you the years for the coaches. Number two, overall coach, from 2000 to 2006 okay number three coach from 1973 to 1977. And number five overall coach from 2009 to 2012.
Gary:I think he played for Pulford.
Cody:Pulford yes, number 3, bob Pulford, with 178 wins, so you need 2 and 5 um wins, so you need two and five Um. That's against me.
Gary:Um Andy Murray.
Cody:Andy Murray, number two with 225 wins. You just need to give me the guy that got fired Before they won the Stanley Cup.
Gary:Wasn't Rogerelson, was it?
Cody:no, I'll give you a hint. It's the same last name as the guy you just said nils no same last name. Number two is andy murray.
Gary:Number five is blank murray god, I'm drawing a blank on what his name would be all right, let me just tell you so we can get this moving terry murray wow yeah okay, I wasn't very good at that one.
Cody:Yeah, I could tell. All right, you ready to move on to the news for?
Gary:Ducks News. Yeah, I would have helped if you sent me something. I would have looked at it.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:I might have made that a little quicker. Sorry, sorry fans. All right, let's go to Ducks News real quick. I might have made that a little quicker, sorry, fans.
Cody:Alright, let's go to Ducks news real quick. Let you recover from that little embarrassment Totally. Of course, to be honest, I probably couldn't tell you the top 5. Maybe I could actually Maybe tell you the top 5 for the Ducks, maybe, alright, so let's try to get through this, because we got a lot of league news to get through all right and we each have three games of the one of them we share yeah in the uh preseason yep, all right.
Cody:So here are the roster moves that the ducks made this last week with training camp and preseason. The players that are returning to juniors Maxim mass, maxim Massey to Chukotomi. Alexander blaze to remote. Or Musky Ethan precision to North Bay. Voitek port, back to Moose jaw. Terrence Smith back to Everett. Uh, carrie Terrence to Erie and I just found out that, um, the Erie Otters named Carrie Terrence their captain. So congratulations, carrie.
Cody:Players that were released from amateur tryouts back to their junior teams Thomas Dijaroude back to Chukunami. Michael McIver to North Bay. Luik Yuzuru to Chikunami. Michael McIver to North Bay. Uh, Luke user row to Chikunami. Jackson Vaughn to Regina and then, uh, simon loves into Seattle. Um, and then the ducks will have two preseason games on victory plus. On September 30th, the uh On Victory Plus. On September 30th, the Ducks game versus LA at 7 pm, pacific Standard Time will be on Victory Plus, and on October 2nd, anaheim versus Utah, also at 7 o'clock Pacific Standard Time, will also be on Victory Plus. So that'd be nice to actually finally watch or see what it's like to be on the victory plus app and everything.
Gary:Yes. And then I did download that on my TV and on my phone. Yeah, I did too so you can actually watch the Dallas stars too on that.
Cody:Yeah, the Dallas stars, yeah, yeah. And then last bit of news, and some really bad news, is a goaltender, john Gibson, underwent emergency.
Gary:I was saying this right, dectomy.
Cody:I was saying it right all day today Cause I was like I know I'm going to butcher it on the podcast and sure enough I get on. We're going live and I'm like the appendectomy surgery on Wednesday. He is expected to be out for approximately three to six weeks, so it looks like a dose doll will be the number one and I believe dance core clang will be the backup. For now, I'm guessing more dance will be the backup. And that is it for ducks news.
Gary:Okay, I guess we're going to go to Kings News and I got a bit of that myself. I'm going to go with the players that have been basically reassigned to their junior teams. They haven't really talked about who's all going to the Reign yet, because a bunch of them are actually played today.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:When they played the Kings. We're doing this right after the Ducks-Kings game in Ontario, since we both wanted to watch it. So these are the players that have been reassigned Oliver Tolk he's back to Calgary in the WHL. Luke Woodworth to Drummondville, to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Cole Davis to Windsor, ohl. Ethan Newtons to Kelowna in the WHL. Corbin Vaughn to Regina in the WHL. Liam Greentree to Windsor in the OHL. Carter George to Owen Sound in the OHL. And then Matthew Mania to Flint, ohl. Jared Woolley to London, ohl. Jared Woolley, london to London, ohl.
Gary:Two bit of injury news for the Kings. Not long after they signed Arthur Calia, he got hit in practice and has a fractured clavicle and I haven't heard if he's going to have to have surgery or how long he might be out. It's probably going to be a month or two, I would imagine, and worse than that against Vegas, if you guys watch the Vegas game or listen to the Vegas game. Drew Dowdy fractured ankle. He's going to have surgery. They say he's out month to month, but I'm guessing it's probably not going to be earliest, maybe late December, early January, but then we'll get more news after the surgery because they'll be able to go in and see if there's damage. They didn't see through whatever imaging they got, so and that's uh that was a nasty injury, though.
Gary:Yeah, I saw like three replays today of it and it's like you know. Luckily it wasn't graphic. Yeah, like a theismann on monday night football, or was it thursday night football when he got his leg broke and that? I mean, I saw that and it made me want to get sick. It just it was awful so I guess.
Cody:I guess we're gonna move on to league news yeah, since we didn't cover league news last week so we got double the league news pretty much. So let's try to get this through quickly but informative we're just gonna do one and the other do one.
Gary:Yeah, that's how we're doing it.
Cody:Okay, all right um the columbus blue jackets have signed forward james van reamsteig to a one year contract worth 900 K.
Gary:And here here's a big one, and for some reason, I don't know why, uh, sidney Crosby gives Pittsburgh I guess he wants them to be competitive, but he gives them a deal. The Penguins have re-signed forward Sidney Crosby to a two-year extension at $8.7 million AAV, and basically I think that's been what he's been making for a long time now $8.7.
Cody:I would say he's one of the most superstitious players in the NHL and you want to know why it's $8.7. I would say he's one of the most superstitious players in the nhl and you know, you know. You want to know why it's 8 8.7. He was born on august 7th of 87 yeah, that makes so 87, 87, his number is 87. He signed for 8.7. He easily could have. Easily could have been in the 10 million range or more probably would have been a few years ago.
Gary:I mean, you think of um dry sidle just signed for 14 million dollars. Now he's probably below dry sidle, but he's still top five no, I'm not saying that.
Cody:I'm just saying, like crosby could easily sign for I I know no matter what, there was going to be an 87 involved inside the, the av av yeah, you predicted 10.87 because no, no, no no elliot friedman said it was going to be 10.87 yes, I did not predict that. Let's get that right. I that was from what I heard on 32 thoughts with elliot friedman. I don't want to take credit for that.
Gary:That was him yeah, they were visiting the kings, him and kyle visiting the kings. Um the next episode we'll have an interview with quentin byfield. So, fans, if you haven't tuned into 32 thoughts, I haven't listened to it yet it's well that one isn't out yet oh they've recorded the interview. They haven't done all the other work. They've been here in la and they were at the game today. They actually had them on. Did you not watch between periods?
Cody:So between the second and third period, that's when I had, apparently, the place that we wanted to order food from. That's literally like a five minute drive from our house. Apparently, we're too far away for them to deliver to our house, so I had to go and pick up the food. Okay so, but all right, let's move on to the next, the rest of the news. Yeah, I'm gonna knock out these next three because just make it quick they're all the red wings ones.
Cody:Yes, I noticed so the red wings have re-signed forward Jonathan Bergen to a one-year extension worth $825K. Then the Red Wings also re-signed forward Lucas Raymond to an eight-year extension worth $8.075 million. Aav overall $64.6 million, Overall $64.6 million. And then the Red Wings also re-signed defenseman Moritz Seider to a seven-year extension worth $8.55 million, and the total amount is $59.85 million for the seven years.
Gary:Well, I guess Iserman's trying to lock in all the young guys, all the young promising guys who've been doing a good job of drafting these guys.
Cody:Yeah, but we'll see if the Iserman plan works. A lot of people are very skeptical about it because it's been taking a little too long than they expected.
Gary:That's because he's cheap.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:So he's going to work them until he can get the price he wants to get him. So if you guys don't know that about and and eiserman's a hall of fame hockey player, he was incredible to watch. I mean he was there with like lemieux and all them yeah playing. He was incredible.
Cody:I believe he was the captain of the red wings, wasn't he? Yeah, I believe he was the captain of the Red Wings, wasn't he?
Gary:I believe he was Okay. Yeah, so the Leafs found the perfect helmet sponsor to match their milk jersey sponsor. Well, I'm glad I got this one.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:Oreo cookies.
Cody:Yeah, so on their jerseys, since everyone has the sponsor on their jersey, right there it says milk, but now on the helmet it's gonna say oreos. So there you go. I mean that's kind of perfect. That's probably the best thing the leafs have done you mean, besides re-signing, like uh? Matthews matthews.
Gary:I mean, what do you think's going to happen with?
Speaker 3:Marner, that's going to be interesting wouldn't that be a shock?
Cody:I mean well Tavares is going to be a free agent next, after next year. So he's either going to if he does resign they're going to give him like a, either a league minimum, or he's going to sign for a lot less and so they may have more money for marner.
Gary:But I don't know well, the kings have 11 million dollars now that's true, I yeah, but if dowdy comes.
Cody:Dowdy's supposed to come back. What december ish?
Gary:late december, january? We don't know. You know. Once they have the surgery you have a better. Yeah, but if Doughty's supposed to come back, what December-ish? Late December, January? We don't know. Once they have the surgery you have a better idea. True, Because they can go in and they might find something else. You just don't know, or it's going to be so clean, they go. Hey man, you know, and you know, Doughty he's.
Cody:He's a fighter.
Gary:Well, he heals quick and he wants to play yeah.
Cody:All right.
Gary:I mean, if he had a cast on. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to skate out there with a cast on. I wouldn't doubt it either. That's what makes him, you know, he loves hockey. Yeah, if you haven't watched him play, he loves hockey. Okay, so I did the Leafs, you're up All right. Okay, so I did the Leafs, you're up.
Cody:All right. The Sabres have re-signed forward Peyton Krebs to a two-year extension worth $1.45 million AAV $2.9 million overall.
Gary:And the Stars. The Dallas Stars have re-signed defenseman Essa Lindell to a five-year extension worth $5.25 million AAV and a total of $26.25 million.
Cody:Good, that was a good move on them.
Gary:Yeah, he's a good player.
Cody:Yeah, dakota Joshua shares that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer over the summer and had the tumor surgically removed, which will keep him out for uh indefinitely. So hopefully, best of luck to dakota joshua.
Gary:He had a great season last year with I believe it was vancouver yeah, it's vancouver yeah, so he had that pretty between the leg shot it was on like sports center, one of the top 10 plays of the day. It was pretty that's right and this, you know, the company I work for does cancer testing, so maybe maybe we had I I don't know if I could look it up or not, but I shouldn't so I'm not gonna say I would I doubt it, because he was based in vancouver.
Gary:It's probably based in vancouver, oh we get stuff from all over the world. Oh really, yeah, yeah all right, it doesn't mean we're not the only ones, so yeah anyways, we'll move on from that um. Alex edler has announced his retirement from professional hockey at the age of 38, and we all remember he played for the kings last year, for the kings of 38.
Cody:Didn't he play for the Kings last year, two years for the?
Gary:Kings, two years yeah.
Cody:He was part of a trade, wasn't he?
Gary:No, I think they signed him.
Cody:Oh, okay.
Gary:Because he was with Vancouver for a long time.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:And they were moving on from him.
Cody:Yeah, the Dallas Stars have re-signed defenseman Thomas Harley to a two-year extension worth $4 million AAV and $8 million overall. That was definitely a good re-signing for them.
Gary:Whoa, that's a Dollar Tree price for him.
Cody:Yeah, he's pretty good, he's a top-pairing defenseman with.
Gary:Hiskenden.
Cody:Hiskenden yeah.
Gary:Blackhawks have named Nick. Faligno as the new team captain. I hate these hockey names. I love the game, but the names just.
Cody:I love the names.
Gary:Yeah, you love the names.
Cody:I love the names.
Gary:You butcher the regular part of the English language. I butcher the hockey names.
Cody:I definitely hockey names, I definitely make a pair, don't we?
Gary:yeah, so this is the handicap hockey podcast.
Cody:Yeah, um so earlier this week I was talking to one of my buddies at work because we were unloading uh fuel at the same time at the same place and he was asking me how the podcast was going. I was like good, and I was telling him he's like, he's like I heard like hockey players have really hard names to pronounce and I just started like looking up like random players. I was like hey, try to say his name. And I the first one was Vaz, was vazvaleski. He's like vazvala vlaski. Yeah, I nailed that one. Oh, yeah, that's one.
Cody:You you've probably heard nothing, but for the last eight years he's been one of the top goalies for the decade. Almost true, true, true, yeah, all right, let's move on. Uh, the tampa bay lightning have named victor headman as the 11th team captain in franchise history, which I thought that was a no-brainer for them, having him just signing the extension and everything. I think he's the longest tenured player there, so I thought that was a no-brainer. The Blackhawks I was surprised they went with Nick Foligno With their captain. I thought they were going to wait another year or two and then just name Bedard as captain.
Gary:Maybe in a year or two Bedard will be the captain.
Cody:Yeah, true, just paving the way.
Gary:There you go, capitals forward. Tj Oshie will be placed on long-term injured reserve and miss the entire 24-25 season To a chronic back injury, and that's bad news. Yeah, I mean, he's not a superstar, but if you play against him, you hate it, and if you have him on your team, you love him. He's one of those guys that just makes everybody else on the team better.
Cody:Yeah, he definitely does do that and he's definitely most famous for, I believe, helping Team USA in one of the Olympics by scoring all those penalty shots or shootout goals.
Gary:Yeah because they could use the same guy over and over again. I don't know he scored, I don't remember how many it was, but I remember that yeah, was that against canada no, I want to say it was russia.
Cody:I want to say it was russia. Um, here's some cool news the nh owners will be meeting soon to approve the expansion opening with the leading candidates, believed to be Atlanta, georgia and Houston Texas.
Gary:We're going to give Atlanta a third try, huh.
Cody:No, they flamed out last time.
Gary:No technically, they were thrashed out. They were flamed out the first time. Oh okay, well, they did flame out yeah, they did flame out yeah, just like uh, johnny storm oh jesus yeah, all right, devils have. Uh. No, I'm sorry I skipped.
Cody:Kyle.
Gary:Oposo has announced his retirement from professional hockey. Now I can remember before we did our hockey league, he would be a guy I'd pick because he would just somehow get me points. Yeah, so I take it, we're not doing our hockey league, right?
Cody:No, we are. Oh, I also. I'll put we need three more people to play.
Gary:Well, I did have a conversation with our guest next week and he'd be interested.
Cody:Okay, perfect. Well, if I already put it out on Instagram already, I I'll I could repost another thing, but if people listening to this, please, if you are interested, it's free to play. Please help us take my dad down, because I think he's won the last three years. He literally went undefeated one of the years. We need help. We need three more two to three more people.
Cody:You shouldn't say anything, because you're right there every time I am, but I still fall short no, you, you won the one year I went the one year I didn't go to the final no, because I I'm still shocked.
Gary:I beat you for that one in the semis dude. I mean mean it wasn't even close.
Cody:I know I was still shocked that that happened. But anyways, guys, please DM us on Instagram or email us at royallyquackgmail. I was going to say this to the end, but I guess, now that we're talking about it, I'll say it again at the end. If you guys are interested, let us know and I can send you the link.
Gary:Eric said he would be in, so if you want to see we only need two okay, cool, I will.
Cody:I'll send him the link. Uh, after this, but all right, um, next one. Since you started it, I'll finish it. The devils have re-signed forward dawson mercer to a three-year extension worth $4 million AAV $12 million overall.
Gary:Okay, the Utah Yeti Hockey Club has re-signed forward Dylan Gunther to an eight-year extension worth.
Cody:Just say 7.1.
Gary:7.1 plus million dollars, yeah, and a little over $57 million for the total of the contract.
Cody:God, utah, and Dylan couldn't have made this any harder, to try to say the freaking AAV and the total amount.
Gary:In the year amount there's only one duplicate number.
Cody:Oh, seven yeah.
Gary:So it's $7,142,857. Why not $58?, why not no, why not 59? And we would have had all different numbers, no duplicates.
Cody:Why couldn't they just do?
Speaker 3:7.1?.
Cody:Just 7.1 million. It's just 7.1 million, just make it easy, anyways. So per Elliot Friedman, oilers forward. Evander Kane had surgery I don't know if it was this Friday, I can't remember when I put this on here Um, but for several injuries sustained during the 23, 24 season and he is expected to miss the first four to five months of this next season.
Gary:All right, and the Colorado Avalanche have re-signed forward Logan O'Connor to a six-year extension worth $2.5 million AAV. Now that's how you sign a contract A total of $15 million. I mean, I'm surprised some of these don't have 42 cents or something after them.
Cody:And one penny. The Jets have re-signed forward Cole Perfetti to a two-year extension worth $3.25 million AAV and $6.5 million overall. Do you want me to take this one, because I don't know if you're going to say the last name, right?
Gary:I got it.
Cody:You got it.
Gary:The Preds have re-signed forward Philip Tomasino. Yep Got it To a one-year extension worth $825K AAV. You know, are these last two contracts? Seems like they got a hometown discount.
Cody:I think Tomasino Profetti yeah, a little bit Tomasino. I believe he just like really broke out last season.
Gary:Yeah, but still 1. 1.2. You know something like that. It's really. I mean, he's getting making the same money as some of the guys that are going to be playing when they come up from the ahl yeah, and play for him, so just go ahead yeah uh, brian little.
Cody:Brian Little has retired from professional hockey at the age of 36.
Gary:And last bit of league news the Buffalo Sabres have named Erasmus Dallin as a new captain.
Cody:Smart.
Gary:Yeah, I think so he's number one pick, right.
Cody:Yeah, he was, I believe, the 2018. I think, so he's number one pick, right yeah, he was, I believe the 2018.
Gary:Yeah, I think so, yeah I would have.
Cody:He was probably my top choice for um the sabers to pick as a captain, but I honestly I thought they were gonna go with alex tuck he was in the running. From what I heard, because I know he's a whatchamacallit. Um, he was a sabers fan, I believe, growing up, so all right, ready to go over these games yeah all right, so we'll go through the ducks games.
Cody:First, we're gonna go over each of our first two games and then we'll go over the the ducks kings game that that just ended. Uh, about what? 20 30 minutes ago? Yeah, 30 minutes. Yeah, all right, the ducks play the san jose sharks on september 24th and the ducks won this game four to three over the san jose sharks. The shots on goal were 30 for the Ducks and 31 for the Sharks.
Cody:Did not start very well for the Ducks. They were down 2-0 to the Sharks after the first period but then scored four unanswered goals right after, and then the Sharks scored one at late in the. And third. I don't know why I'm blanking right now, I'm literally looking right at it, but here's the the. You know the ducks did really well in the power play. They went two for four. That's good, of course. Again, too many penalties. They had six penalties. This game Too much.
Cody:The worst part was the face-offs and that's probably going to be a main thing we're going to talk about in this episode. They were 37.3% on face-offs. That's bad. We got to win face-offs. That's bad, we gotta win face-offs. It's hard to stay ahead or get ahead or whatever when you're not starting with the puck. So alright, the goals Carson Meyer scored in the second period with assists from Dionichio and Harkins. Igor Seterov had the power play goal for the second goal, from assists from Pisek and Kachuk. Brett Leeson had a goal with assists from Nestoranko to make it 3-2 Anaheim. And then Mark Pisek also scored on the power play to make it 4-2, with assists from Carson Meyer and Oscar Dansk. A goalie had a power play to make it 4-2 with assist from Carson Meyer and, oh, oscar Dansk, a goalie, had a power play assist. That's something let's see.
Speaker 3:And of course the three stars were all Sharks players.
Cody:That's usually what happens when the home team usually gets majority of the of the stars. That's just how it is. Uh, alex winberg was the number three star with one goal and that's it. Um, I don't get it, because pissick had a goal and an assist and he's not even on here. Um, was it? Duskin gushkin, on the sharks, was the number two star with one goal, one assist, and then jake woolman had two assists as the number one star. I was just crazy how people could be that. And there's players on the other team that had just as many points. But I digress, all right.
Cody:Next game the ducks uh, played the sharks again, this time at home. On september 26th. The ducks lost three to two in overtime to the sharks. The ducks outshot the sharks 34 to 19. Uh, mason mctavish started the scoring with assist from Trevor Zegers and Tristan Luneau, which I saw this goal and it was a great play. Leo Carlson, in the third period, scored on a power play with assist from Lacombe and Terry to make it 2-1. And then the Ducks gave up two goals in the third for San Jose to tie it, a goal in the third for San Jose to tie it, and then Luca Cagnoni scored the overtime winner to have the Sharks take the game.
Cody:And here we go again. Faceoff percentage. It was what? 37.3 last game, it was 31.7 this game. We got to win face-offs and again, stop giving up penalties. We had six left the first game, five this game. We gotta work on that. Let's see the three star. Oh, there was no three stars this game, apparently. So, um, yeah, so I'm trying to see if I could find anything else. My thing froze on me, but I didn't. I wasn't really able to watch most of this game just because I was driving for work and I'm not really allowed to, uh, drive and watch games probably a good thing it is a good thing, because I'm literally driving a bomb.
Cody:Alright, and then I'll let you talk about your first two games.
Gary:So on September 23rd the Kings played the Utah Hockey Club. The number one star was a Yeti no, okay, so well. The. The number one star was a Yeti no, okay, so well. The Kings played with. Just, they have to have enough guys that kind of qualify to be. They have to have people that people want to see. I guess that's a simple way of putting it. So, like Liam Greentree, number one pick, he qualified and I think they played. Clark and Edmondson Turcotte played. You have to have eight guys, but Utah, they pretty much played their top lines against the Kings and that started off in the first period with Utah going up 2-0. Excuse me, jim Hiller obviously gave a great speech after the first period because they did come back and the Kings scored two in the second period. Let me see if I can get you exactly. So the scoring in the first period was Kraus from Dersey and Maselli and then Kerfa from Maselli and Dersey and in the Kings it was Jeff Millat with Caleb Jones with the assist and then Alex Turcotte with Pinelli and Moverari. So third period had no scoring, but pretty quick into the overtime I think 19 seconds. Clayton Keller scored. Clayton Keller is an all-star. Yeah, he scored with 19 seconds left Utah winning in overtime 3-2.
Gary:Let's get over to some other stats. Like Cody was talking about, here we go. The shots on goal the Kings had 29. Utah had 23. And you talk about faceoff the Kings 64.3, utah was only 35.7. They both were 50% on the power play. But the Kings had 18 minutes of penalties. They only had 14. We were 1 for 2 on the power play. They were 2 for 4. Difference in the game right there, difference in the game and Difference in the game. And you're talking not even having a lot of stars played. It wasn't like Kopey was out with Clayton Keller, so the Kings did get out hit, which is shocking that they're trying to be tougher. They got out hit 31 to 18. Block shots 14 for Utah, only 5 for the Kings.
Gary:Other than that, I'll go to the three stars. Three stars were Keller, who had obviously the game winner, kraus, who had a goal, and then Dersey, who had obviously the game winner, kraus, who had a goal, and then Dersey, who had two assists. So one was Keller, two was Kraus, three was Dersey. So you had basically the same situation that Cody talked about with one of his games. So then game two was really the game from hell for us, even though we've won the game three to two against Vegas. So we had what are not not our top line, but our, our middle middle lines playing and they didn't have a lot of their stronger forwards playing. They had some good defenders but not their stronger forwards.
Gary:The scoring started off with Alex Laferriere on the power play from Turcotte and Fiala, so we were up one to nothing. Then new pickup, tanner Janot scored from Warren Fogle and Quinton Byfield. So he had two guys that we just picked up Rob Blake picked up were in part of that one goal Fogle and Janot. And that was the first period. And then second period, noah Hannafin scored from Laziski and Aston Reese, so now it's 2-1. Aston Reese, so now it's 2-1. And then Fogle scores on assist from Byfield and Fiala, so it's 3-1. And then in the third period, lazinski scored unassisted and that was the final goal of the game. Kings won the game 3-2. The three stars of the game this time we got somebody in there, even though it was in Vegas Hannafin was the number one star, warren Fogle was the number two star with a goal and assist, and Lazinski was the third star a goal and assist. Why Hannafin was the number one star over Lazinski. I haven't figured out.
Cody:It makes sense if you don't think about it, yeah.
Gary:Now this was a very competitive. More competitive the Kings outshot the Golden Knights 30-24. Face-offs Vegas won 52.6. The Kings won 47.4. But I mean, you can live with something that close Power play. We were 1 for 4. They were 0 for 3. The hits we out-hit them 25-23. Obviously, because we had some of the bigger hitters that we picked up like Janot and Fogle are supposed to be big hitters Block shots we still were weak. We only had nine, they had 18. And that was a game on Wednesday. So the Kings are now 1-0-1-1.
Gary:Yeah, and the Ducks are 1-0-1-1. Yeah, and the Ducks are 1-0-1-1.
Cody:Now going into today's game.
Gary:You just keep going.
Cody:I just keep going.
Gary:Keep going. Okay, in today's game. Actually, I watched the whole game. I don't know. Did you miss any of it, Cody, when you had to go get food?
Cody:I missed, I want to say, the last five to seven minutes of the second period.
Gary:Okay, so in the first period on the power play, Alex Ferryhair scores again from Kempe and Kopitar.
Cody:So the.
Gary:Kings are up 1-0. Oh, my turn, sure.
Cody:I thought you were just going to go with your whole King stuff and I was going to talk about mine.
Gary:No, I think we should just go through the game. Okay, so you have stuff to talk about for the first period, right?
Cody:Yeah, all right, so I'll talk about my first period stuff. Let me find my. So. Sam Colangelo scored a power play goal with assists from Fabry and Zellweger. It was nice to see the power play look good because I believe the rest of the game the power play looked okay. We'll get into the next part. But um, real quick in the first period when, on the king's first goal, strome takes a horrible penalty in his own offensive zone and then the king. Now the kings have a four on three power play and the ducks defender breaks his stick and and then the forward gives the defender the stick. And now that so the forward has no stick, he can't use his stick to block passing lanes and everything which lets I believe those. What kopitar? Yeah, kopitar passed it to campe. Can't be one-timed, it and it just just snuck behind. Dostold and lafarrier cleaned it up.
Cody:But that's pretty much what happened, yeah, yeah which, like I said, I have no problem with that, but still it's the bad penalty in the offensive zone and I I saw it right away like it was a blatant hook. I believe it was a hooking penalty and I saw it now I saw it.
Cody:I'm like, yep, that's hooking. And, like I said, I don't mind if we take a penalty, just that it's going to save us from, you know, save the team from scoring or having a scoring chance, but don't take a pen like that kind of a penalty in your offensive zone. It was unnecessary so, but luckily sam colangelo uh scored for us. I believe it was a tip. It was a weird tip in. I believe I think it went off a Kings player, I think it was what they said. But, like I said, nonetheless we scored and we tied it up 1-1. And that was it from the first period.
Gary:Yeah, we go into the second period and the Ducks are on the power play. The Ducks are on the power play and Kopitar gets a shorthanded goal from Kempe and Riddick Goalie gets an assist in a preseason game.
Cody:I think he only had an assist because I think he made the save. But alright, I want to talk about this one, because this one really pissed me off too. On the brand clark power play for the ducks, we get a great scoring chance almost instantly but whiffed on the shot and it leads to a two-on-one. The other way, where copa, where copi, scored on a shorthanded goal, which, like I said, that two-on-one. You should be scoring in that situation, but the whole power play was bad after that. They couldn't keep the puck in the zone, got zero shots on goal and the king's pk out hustled us on every loose puck. We had one extra guy, but yet somehow the Kings beat the Ducks to every single 50-50 puck or loose puck, how it shouldn't be happening, and I'll talk about this right now too. The Kings defense looked really good in this game. Every time a Ducks player had possession of a puck, there was a Kings player literally right on him almost instantly.
Speaker 3:You know he was swarming him and everything.
Gary:Well, you know, they were one of the top defensive teams.
Cody:No, I know, but like still, you guys didn't even have all your top players or anything, and yet you guys still looked really good.
Gary:Yeah, we only had our top line.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:Basically 2A and 2b or whatever you want to say. Second and third lines yeah, but byfield didn't play for you guys and he's your neither did, neither did uh dono. He didn't play all it ends, but we didn't have we didn't have carlson, cologne, zegers, mctavish or Terry. They were all supposed to play. When I saw it, I was going oh, I was looking forward to that.
Cody:But that's not the reason. I'm not blaming who played and who didn't play. These people are trying to show that they're professional hockey players and they deserve to be here. Even the Kings didn't have all their best players out there and they did have some, but not all. But still we're getting outplayed on our own power play and I don't know how many times I saw players on our power plays where they just they couldn't handle the puck. They get like it was a perfect. If they handle these passes, this game could have been a different game.
Cody:I don't know how many times I saw a ducks player on the even on a power play or even just on a scoring, or in the offensive zone. They're wide open and they can't handle the pass. And it's a perfect pass right to them. It goes, either they just mishandle it. I don't know what happens, but it happened too many times.
Cody:There was too many times where the ducks would pass the puck uh, back to the defense and there was nobody there, and it goes all the way back to the other end and still and this is this bugged me last season there's too much play in the back end and in our defensive zone. That's where mistakes were made last year and we're still continuing it now. I understand you want to try to find the right hole or try to find the right seam to get up the ice, but when you just keep circling and the play that used to have us do in soccer practice the Ducks literally just played their own little weave drill right there between their defensive zone and the red line, the center line we got to move up. You're not going to score unless you move up. So I believe that's something we need to work on.
Gary:Maybe that Coach Tim had that lady coach uh had some influence on how the ducks played oh, the one, that, yeah, the one that she made the defender stay back with a goalie in the midfield and she just wanted forwards to go up and I go no, you need to move everybody up and keep.
Cody:No, she had she literally had the defense. Literally all I'm like no, you gotta have them move up to center, because now you're just giving the team so much extra room to play.
Gary:Yeah, she was something but anyways, only time I've ever been fired and I wasn't even getting paid to help yeah, well, she was, she was just bad. I don't remember her name and I'm glad, lisa. Oh, my god didn't. I didn't want to know.
Cody:Oh sorry, all right, let's go to the third period.
Gary:So third period, Alex Laferriere. Well, you know they're going to maybe put him on the top line. It looks like he's he's there.
Cody:Yeah, he looked good.
Gary:Kopitar with his second assist and Grant Clark with an assist. I thought that was going to be another Kempe assist. That's what they said on the thing they had given it to Edmondson and then they go no, no, it was Kempe, now it's Clark on the official score and that put the Kings up 3-1. And that was like pretty quick into the third period, I think 35 seconds in yeah 35 seconds in, and then Cody.
Cody:Well, luckily Frank Petr um got us within a goal. Uh about with what five, four, with four minutes left, um drew hellison, pretty much just. It was like a shot pass, I would say, right into the middle, and it was just a nice little soccer move by Vetrano. Let a little skate deflection in, which is completely legal because he didn't kick it in, he just deflected it in and you're allowed to do that. So that was a good move on Frank Vetrano. Um the one, there's one. There's one thing I really got pissed off at the end of the game when the Ducks had a, the power play and the the extra man. Why the hell is ross johnston out there at all?
Cody:cody, the game doesn't matter I don't care, we're just playing. No, no, no, I don't care there's. I'd rather see dostol down there than ross johnston. I'm being dead serious. I rather see great cronin down there than ross johnston. Ross johnston does not need to be out there on the power play, but they did this last year yeah they.
Gary:They had Knucklepuck playing goal. That's fine. Remember that Knucklepuck comes in. That was a play. Drop everything, knuckles it in, ties the game up to go to overtime.
Cody:That's great. That's a movie. I'm talking about something that's happening. Why is Ross Johnston on the power play or when the Ducks pull their goalie? Why is he the extra player? I would have rather seen anyone else over Ross Johnston. I would rather have seen Drew Helleson. I would rather have seen, of course, zellweger should be out there. I would rather see Noah Warren out there. I would rather see. Like I said, I think it would have been better if I was out there over Ross Johnson. I can barely even skate but, like I said, ross Johnson does not need to be out there. During that time, all I saw him do was just try to hit people. We have the puck and he's literally just trying to hit people.
Gary:That's his job, I guess.
Cody:Well, good, but don't do it. On the freaking power play, I don't understand that. I don't see any. I don't know how the face off percentage was on this game.
Gary:I don't think there is any. I don't think they've tallied it all up. It's a little quick. I would bet that the king's definitely out. I don't think they've tallied it all up. It's a little quick, yeah.
Cody:I would bet that the Kings definitely out won the faceoff. Yeah, yeah, I'm pretty sure too.
Gary:I mean you think about it, they had Kopey and he's one of the best in the league. No he was he's out there. And then I mean I don't know, I mean you didn't have your number one line out there.
Cody:Or two.
Gary:So I mean those should be your two best face-off guys, the two centers.
Cody:They're still not our best. Actually, I think our best face-off guy was actually playing and it was Lundestrom. I think he's our best.
Gary:Yeah, that's something you guys need to work on. I'm hoping Kopey's teaching quentin how to do it god, I hope.
Cody:I mean, I was hoping getzloff would have done that before you went to the getzloff player safety.
Gary:It was very good yeah we didn't.
Cody:I didn't see any stars of the game on this one either um, I I still think it's a little too early, but um, the shots on goal, the ducks had 19, the Kings had 33. Each team went one for three on the power play and each team had 13 minutes and penalties. But I can tell you, in the first and this is something we didn't talk about in the first period there was a lot of uh fighting, wanting, uh fights about the go down a lot. Well, there was a lot of fighting, fights about the go down a lot.
Gary:Well, there was a lot of physical play.
Cody:A lot of physical.
Gary:Pushing and shoving, which happens especially when the puck's picked up by the goalie and somebody's trying to slap at it, or something like that. So yeah, there was quite a bit of that.
Cody:Yeah, I was just like wow, literally after every stoppage there was a D bit of that. Yeah, I was just like wow, literally after every stoppage there was a ducks and kings player just going at it yeah, well, one one thing I know hillar's been pushing for is a little more toughness by the kings yeah so, and now they got some bigger guys yeah they got edmondson, they got.
Gary:They had Helanious out there. I mean, he's been the talk.
Cody:I heard his name quite a bit.
Gary:Hiller's been praising him on his daily press conferences during camp. I don't think he'll start with the. He could end up with the Kings later if we get an injury or if whoever's the 4C doesn't do their job. So we could see because him and Andre Lee were, I mean two big physical presence and they were one of the reasons they made it all the way against Coachella.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:You know, for the championship of the Pacific Division of the AHL. So there's, both teams have promising young people in their midst and I mean I thought Riddick was excellent today, Excellent yeah. And Dostal, I don't think he stood a chance on at least two of the goals.
Cody:I mean they didn't help him, yeah, so All right, are we done with the game now?
Gary:Yeah.
Cody:Okay, so the Ducks have three games this week. On Monday they play the Kings at 7 o'clock Pacific Standard Time. The game will be on the NHL Network, victory Plus, kclp 13, and Valley Sports West. And then let me move to October. Thank God, it's finally October. On the 2nd the Ducks are home against the Utah Hockey Club. That one will also be at 7 o'clock Pacific Standard Time. The game will also be on Victory Plus in KCOP yeah, kcop 13. And then on Friday they're away in San Jose and that game's at 7 o'clock Pacific Standard Time. It doesn't show what the game's going to be on. I'm guessing maybe ESPN Plus or the Ducks may livestream it on their website. And then do you have the King's schedule?
Gary:I don't in front of me.
Cody:Maybe I can pull it up real quick.
Gary:Alright, if I do this I can get there hold on schedule there we go oh, you got it.
Cody:um, just hold it up, just give me a second here.
Gary:Well, obviously you know they're playing on October 30th. Yeah, they're playing, or September 30th, sorry yeah they're playing the Ducks September 30th and then October 3rd, I do believe they're. They're playing in Canada, so it's a neutral site. They're, uh, the boston bruins talk about it.
Cody:That's weird yeah, they're oh yeah, they're playing in at the center videotron quebec city. Yeah, I guess that's a. I'm surprised you're playing.
Gary:Boston. We have no home place to play other than the rain stadium because they're doing stuff to Staples Center.
Cody:So both your games are at the same place Right Thursday this is 4 pm, Pacific Daylight Time.
Gary:They'll be playing the Bruins on October 3rd and then October 5th they'll be playing the Florida Panthers Stanley Cup Champions, also at 4pm Pacific Daylight Time. Then the very next game they're opening in Buffalo, that game will be at 4. Pm.
Cody:Yeah, well, we could talk about that next week.
Gary:Yeah, we just that's opening. They're opening the season for them.
Cody:Yeah, so um, all I can tell you is the Jersey looked great today.
Gary:No, I meant to tell you before I even walked in the Wade jerseys. I really liked the ducks. Yeah, they do look good.
Cody:So I only have one thing I think they would look better if they had the orange helmets with that. I'd like to see what it looks like. Maybe they'll try it. But I I can say I do like the matte black helmets for the kings. I think that looks really nice. Yes, I think they're very, very cool of course I thought it was funny because I was watching the game on the king's broadcast and they kept showing the old logo, the home plate logo yeah, I like the like the new, I like the Chevy.
Cody:Yeah Well, you guys can't come up with your your own shape or anything like that. You thought you had to copy other logos.
Gary:It's something we've had for long before this.
Cody:Yeah.
Gary:It's a comeback from the Gretzky era.
Cody:No, I know.
Gary:I don't know. I don't know. You had a home plate logo, literally a logo that looked like a home plate, and then now you go to a car dealership logo. Hey, if it works, it works right, yeah.
Cody:It is better than what it was.
Gary:Hands down, it's better. They could have done a, of course, one man's opinion.
Cody:I agree with your opinion, though.
Gary:Yeah, it could have changed a little bit more, got some of the old colors back, at least in something in a jersey. Well, they may do some kind of retro jersey still. Yeah, but it wasn't like the rebrand you guys had. I mean, you guys basically blew everything out of the water and started new I, I full, I love it, everything about it.
Cody:Like I said, I think I would like for them to at least test the orange helmets on the way jerseys. Just test it. I want to see what it looks like to me.
Gary:I mean their, their home jerseys could have been a little more white in there somewhere. It's really orangey.
Cody:To be honest, last season, with the 30th anniversary jersey, I didn't like it right away, but then I saw it on the ice and I saw it live and I'm like, okay, I got to get this jersey. I wanted one. I like the away jersey, I got to get this jersey.
Gary:I wanted one. I like the away jersey way better than the home jersey Way better.
Cody:I like both. I'm definitely planning on getting both. Of course, I'm already getting one, I already know. Oh, are you? Yeah?
Gary:You got. Yeah, christine is getting for your birthday.
Cody:So I am excited for that.
Gary:Oh, a week from today again, it's cody's birthday don't forget to to wish him happy birthday on instagram, or you can do it on the uh gmail twitter, you know you know, be the know it'd be the best book.
Cody:You know it'd be the best present you guys is is following us on all our social media, making rating or rating and reviewing us. Please leave a review If you like it or not. Let us know. That way we can make it better for everyone. I would really love that as a birthday present is just telling all your family and friends about our podcasts. You know, help spread. You know and think about it. If your friends don't know anything about hockey, we have episodes talking about hockey one-on-one where we break it down for you.
Gary:I don't know, Is anybody else ever really broken down like that I?
Cody:I don't know is anybody else ever really broke it down like that? I, I don't know.
Gary:I I've had I'm sure there probably has been but yeah, I'm pretty sure there has been.
Cody:But, like I said, I want to grow the game. I know so many people that have. Just they don't. Either they they don't like it because they've never watched it or they've never been to a game live or anything like that I like. Just I tell them people like I just love going to games, like I was in high school and my soccer coach literally just he's like hey, I have extra king's tickets, do you want them? As a ducks fan, I just love, I just love going to games. You know, I have no problem going to just a different game. I just love watching hockey.
Gary:Yeah.
Cody:So, guys, the best birthday present would be rating us, telling your family and friends about us leaving reviews, please. That would be the best birthday present from you, guys.
Gary:And I like to get a response. How many podcasts have a song about the podcast?
Cody:Hockey-wise? I don't know, but I know for one of the baseball podcasts I listen to they have that.
Gary:Yeah, but I mean, ours is kicking man.
Cody:Yeah too.
Gary:They have that, yeah, but I mean, ours is kicking man. Yeah, I. I usually monday some monday, tuesday, wednesday, especially if because if I'm not working in the office and I have to drive cover for somebody, I'll listen to the podcast and then I listen to that whole song like god. It's kicking yeah so we'd like to hear a response from you guys and what you think about it.
Cody:Yeah, that would be really nice. You guys, like I said, I don't need anything materialist or anything. Just tell your family and friends about our podcast. Send us questions please. I don't care if it's a weird question or a funny question, a food question, star wars, marvel I can talk about all that stuff all day. You know hockey, how bad the angels are.
Gary:So, like I said, let's get AEG to buy the Angels or the Samueli family.
Cody:Samuelis, samuelis, yeah, I'll take more Cuban buying the Angels at this point. I think that'd be great.
Gary:The guy for the Clippers had a short rumor on him.
Cody:They also had one on Kronky the Rams.
Gary:Anybody, somebody that's going to.
Cody:Get rid of Artie.
Gary:Right now, from the last time I looked at a mock draft, not to talk about another sport, because I love sports, not just hockey. It's just my favorite one. The Angels might have the number one pick. And right now the mock draft that I saw had who was the number one pick from Baltimore His little brother oh Jackson Holliday Evan. Holliday Matt Holliday's son.
Cody:I think it's Ethan Holliday. Maybe it's Ethan. It's not Evan. It's it's Ethan Holiday.
Gary:Maybe it's Ethan. It's not Evan, it's Ethan Holiday. He's another shortstop.
Cody:He's a third baseman. Not what it said on the mock draft. Oh.
Gary:If he's a third baseman, let's get him quick, because we need one of those because the guy that we gave $250 million hardly ever plays.
Cody:Yeah, he says it's too long guy that we gave $250 million, hardly ever placed. Yeah, he, rather he says it's too long. Right now the Angels have the third best odds on Tankathon. Let's see. Oh, I did the Tankathon and guess who got the number one pick? The Anaheim Angels. Really, it was just a simulator. They have one for the nba, nfl, nhl, like I could have done one for the ducks. Oh, that would have been bad for the ducks. They would have moved down in the draft and chicago would have got the number one pick again. Yeah, like we need that again anyways, guys, um, like I already said before, please follow us on instagram, twitter, facebook, all the social media apps.
Cody:You can email us with questions or reviews or just tell us what you love or hate about the podcast. The email is royally quacked at gmailcom. So if you have a comment, please leave it and everything, and hopefully we can talk to you through there. We do have two to three spots open up for our Fantasy Hockey League, free to play. Help me take down my dad.
Gary:Um, if you, if I can get it it's time for you to take it over, son. Yeah, um, I'm not going to let you do it, though, cause I yeah you got that competitive gene that I have, so yeah, we want to win.
Cody:Yeah, I hate, yeah, I hate losing. I hate losing more than I love winning.
Gary:And just a prelude next week predictions Mm-hmm, Yep and we will have a guest who?
Cody:Yeah, we're going to leak it out that we have a guest.
Gary:We're going to have a guest. I'm not going to say who yeah. And I have talked with this guest and he says he's going to predict better than we do.
Cody:Ooh, that's a challenge. Let's do it.
Gary:You know we'll see what happens. Um, I'm looking forward to it.
Cody:But yeah, Um, if you guys are interested in the fantasy hockey league, let me, uh, just direct message me and I can send you the link for that. We play on the ESPN app for that and then I believe that's everything right.
Gary:Sounds like I'm hungry.
Cody:Let's get out here, so you can eat.
Gary:Sounds good to me. All right, go Kings, go All right, let's go ducks.
Cody:We'll can eat. Sounds good to me, all right, go Kings go. All right, let's go Ducks. We'll see you guys next week, yep.
