I'm doing good. How are you, Dad? Long time no see.
Gary (00:46.77)
I'm doing all right. I'm looking forward to it now. He says that because we had dinner last night and it was from COVID when COVID and you know, every Saturday night we'd have dinner and have game night and play games. We don't do it every Saturday night here lately because we're just all so busy, but we did it last night and had a blast. we're so we're bringing in a.
a relaxed, refreshed hockey podcast pair to wow you and hopefully entertain you for just a bit of time. And we do appreciate that you spend it with us, guys.
Cody (01:31.313)
We really do. All right. So it's been I've been bad at this lately, but you're ready for a trivia question.
Gary (01:33.134)
So.
Gary (01:43.176)
no. I'd forgotten about that.
Cody (01:47.888)
Alright.
Can you give me the top five people with the most hat tricks in NHL history?
Gary (02:01.006)
five most hat tricks in NHL history. my God.
Cody (02:07.249)
You should be able to get for sure. Yeah. Number one with 50.
Gary (02:09.399)
Wayne Gretzky.
Gary (02:14.019)
Alex Ovechkin?
Cody (02:15.953)
Just outside the top five with 30, he's number six.
Gary (02:21.486)
Okay.
Gary (02:26.318)
Connor McDavid.
Cody (02:28.155)
He hasn't been playing long enough. He's not really a hat trick person.
Gary (02:29.782)
okay all right let me think here mike bossy
Cody (02:36.337)
Mike Bossy number three with 39. So you just need number two, number four and number five.
Gary (02:45.614)
four and five, okay. Because this goes over a long history, so I have to think of a big goal scorers.
Cody (02:52.945)
the, most of these players are around the time you were watching hockey as, know, back then.
Gary (03:03.246)
I still watch hockey. What do you mean way back then?
Cody (03:05.423)
No, I'm just saying these players are not current right now.
Gary (03:10.314)
If this was a, you guys could see us, I have a really big handprint slap right on my face from my son. Okay, I would know, Mario Lemieux?
Cody (03:17.755)
Yeah. Yep.
Cody (03:25.073)
Mario Lemieux number 2 with 40.
Gary (03:29.104)
Yaramir Yager?
Cody (03:32.773)
Yarmir Yager is not on the list.
Gary (03:35.83)
No in the top five. Whoa. marcel dian
Cody (03:44.817)
number seven he is with 28
Gary (03:49.39)
So he would probably be the... Lucrobatay?
Cody (03:55.473)
Blue Crobotie is not on the list.
Gary (03:59.298)
I know you asked me about hat tricks with the Kings and I can't remember the answers. So no other King is in it than I take it. So big goal scorer, hat tricks, hat tricks. Let me think.
Cody (04:04.559)
Yeah.
Cody (04:11.365)
No.
Cody (04:18.479)
I know what I'll give you a hint. I know one of the players he's most famous for playing with the Bruins and the black heart.
Cody (04:33.393)
Blivitz ruined some blocks.
Gary (04:38.114)
How about Gordie Howe?
Bobby Hall?
Cody (04:43.953)
Which one? No. Brett Hall. That's not the one I was trying to hint at you, but yes, Brent Hall, Brett Hall number four with 33 hat tricks.
Gary (04:44.844)
Bobby Hull. Brett Hull.
Gary (04:57.787)
Was he the hint for... Okay.
Cody (04:59.161)
No, number five is the hint. And I was looking to make sure I was right. Yeah. So he played this player played for
Gary (05:06.272)
And are you?
Cody (05:12.475)
Boston Toronto I never played for I thought he played for Chicago I'm this I must be thinking of a player you play for Boston Toronto and New York Rangers
Gary (05:30.572)
That guy's frozen me off.
Cody (05:31.88)
he know he did play for the Chicago Blackhawks. He started with the Chicago Blackhawks. OK, so I was right.
Gary (05:40.118)
Wow, I'm drawing a blank.
Cody (05:48.849)
played from 1963 till 1981.
Gary (05:54.062)
18 here. yeah long career
Gary (06:03.732)
I hate when I draw blanks. Yeah, I do.
Cody (06:06.865)
Give up. Phil Esposito.
Gary (06:16.718)
now if you see me, it's a hand print on my other cheek from me slapping myself for not thinking of Philip Esposito.
What?
Gary (06:32.782)
You know, I didn't even think of him, which is, you know, when I first started really loving hockey, he was one of the big scorers. And it's I'm shocked I didn't think of him. But well, you know, he has been kind of out of the limelight for what, 40 years.
Cody (06:43.109)
Yeah.
Me too.
Cody (06:53.391)
Yeah, true. All right. Let's move on to our team news. So I'll go first with the Ducks news. All right. The Ducks will have their games broadcasted on Bali sports for the upcoming season. Expect the games to be on Bali sports. So Cal and Bali sports west. And I believe they are keeping John Alders and Brian Hayward as their
Gary (07:01.557)
All right.
Cody (07:24.189)
commentators for this season as well So and then this is just just came in before recording Per elliot freedman radco gudis will attend the north america nhl media tour next month Freedman is is speculating that's a big word speculating That gudis could hint or that this could hint at gudis becoming the next captain
Gary (07:55.651)
Yeah.
Cody (07:55.941)
which I probably would not mind, you know, give him, he has two years left. He can always, polish up the next McTavish or Carlson or, you know, Terry, one of them, I think Terry's going to be a captain either easy. They're going to have an A or C on his Jersey this year, no matter what. So if, if, if anything, I'm guessing it's going to be probably good as, as captain. If this is what they're saying,
And then Terry and Fowler as the ACE. That's what I'm going to be guessing.
Gary (08:30.21)
You heard it first on Royally Quacked.
Cody (08:35.203)
All right, that's it for Ducks News.
Gary (08:38.026)
I have a lot less Kings news, but I'm going to start off with a minor signing. The rain sign forward. Bryce Brodsinski, there was no term on that. He I think he was drafted seventh around by like Toronto and is just. Like a free agent. Or I don't know, maybe he was drafted and never signed by them.
I think he's just coming out coming out. Yeah, I think he had five years in college, if I'm not mistaken. So he was drafted but never signed. So he's one of those college graduates that, you know, once they graduate, they become free agent. So and it was up to Toronto to sign them. Other good news is Aeroquartio signs a three year.
Gary (09:34.266)
$783 ,333 AAV contract. So Eric Pertillo is going to be a reign or a king here. I think he's going to be a king next year, not this year, unless injuries happen. So. And the biggest news is yesterday. Happy birthday cap on Zay Copetar's birthday.
Cody (10:01.997)
So just so you guys know, we are recording this on Sunday. So as in yesterday, we mean on Saturday. Because yeah, because yeah, on Kobe Bryant Day.
Gary (10:09.07)
August 24th, otherwise known as Kobe Bryant Day for 8 and 24. And his birthday was 8 -23.
Gary (10:23.294)
Anyways, and that's King's News. And then we'll pass over and go over into League News. You want to start, Cody? You want me to?
Cody (10:33.841)
I'll start. Pat the Patrick line a trade speculation is finally over Patrick lining and a 20, 26 second round pick trait, goes to the Montreal Canadians for defenseman Jordan Harris. Seems like it was pretty easy to get lion aid because I don't think Jordan Harris is anything's, you know, like a top.
Gary (11:02.41)
And a second round pick.
Cody (11:04.337)
Yeah, because it's they're taking on the eight the full 8 .7 It was kind of like a it was like a salary and a yeah pretty much
Gary (11:09.752)
So that, there's no dump.
Gary (11:19.064)
Canadians have at least a goal scorer. I can see that.
Cody (11:21.199)
Yeah. Yeah. So I kind of wish the ducks would have made this move if that's what they were going to get. But well.
Gary (11:30.698)
Would you have wanted to? Well, I you would have got a second round pick out of it too. So. And the next bit of news Edmonton did not match the offer sheets, so both Holloway and Broberg are now Saint Louis Blues. And the Oilers will receive a second round pick for Broberg and a third round pick for Holloway.
Cody (11:57.241)
I was shocked that I thought they were at least going to go for Holloway for sure. But then they made a couple of trades that kind of were cheaper that made it work that could probably make it work for them.
Gary (12:11.842)
Yeah, but Broberg was he has some what? At least one two goal game. In the.
Cody (12:18.641)
I know broberg he was in the ahl most of the season last year He was just really he came up for the playoffs and did really well for them
Gary (12:23.938)
Yeah, but he came up.
Gary (12:28.022)
Yeah.
Cody (12:29.905)
So, all right, next one. Nashville predators, goalie prospect, Yaroslav Askerov is traded to the San Jose sharks along with forward Nolan Burke.
and a 2025 third round pick and going back to Nashville is forward David Edstrom goalie Magnus Corona Corona. Corona and, Vegas is first round pick.
Gary (12:59.192)
Sounds good to me.
Gary (13:03.266)
Well, it is an option to be San Jose's or they have Vegas's first round pick. But I think they'd rather get rid of Vegas's first round pick.
Cody (13:13.041)
Well, I know the 2025 first round pick going to Nashville is a top 10 protected. The info is San Jose will have the choice of either their pick or Vegas if it is in the top 10.
Gary (13:27.01)
Well, unless San Jose makes major strides and is actually pushes themselves a better record than Vegas, they're going to get Vegas's pick. I mean, the Vegas pick. So Nashville get Vegas's pick. That's just the bet.
Cody (13:44.08)
Yeah.
Ahem.
Cody (13:51.482)
Yeah.
Gary (13:53.07)
And the next bit of news is a first, a first on NHL 25. We got the Hughes brothers, not one, not two, but three Hughes brothers that will be on the cover of NHL 2025.
Cody (14:04.037)
Ha
Cody (14:11.057)
I think that would be a good, that's a good choice. I think that's, you know, with Jack Hughes, hopefully coming back helpfully healthy this year, Quinn Hughes having the fantastic year he had and you know, Luke Hughes is an up and comer. So I think that's a great, a great choice for the NHL cover.
Gary (14:29.534)
Absolutely, I agree totally with that. It's. Well, the idea is to get more people in and involved with it.
Having brothers brings family. That family atmosphere coming to NHL.
Cody (14:46.865)
It's crazy that three brothers all made the NHL and they all are like top players for their team. Pretty much.
Gary (14:54.178)
But Luke is getting there.
Cody (14:55.951)
Well, he's like, he's only, he's going to be in his second year.
Gary (14:59.766)
Yeah, but he, I'm, he might've been expected to be the best. We'll see if that's actually true, but could you imagine, your three sons all being, yes, that's incredible in itself. So congratulations to Mr. And Mrs. Hughes. Obviously, you know how to raise hockey players.
Cody (15:05.465)
Yeah, that's what I've heard. Yep. All right.
Cody (15:15.537)
top 10 picks in the draft?
Cody (15:20.687)
Yeah, that's, that's crazy.
Gary (15:28.59)
because you got three of them and they're all very, good. And two of them are on the same team. So there's a blessing. You only have to go to Vancouver and then go to New Jersey.
Cody (15:31.632)
Very good.
Cody (15:35.664)
Ha ha ha ha.
Cody (15:42.865)
If only they can get Quinn to come over to New Jersey, then that'd be deadly.
Gary (15:50.902)
Yeah, that would be deadly. But who wouldn't want any of those three brothers on their team? I know that I'd take them on the Kings too.
Cody (15:53.503)
All right.
god, I would take them on the ducks in a heartbeat.
Cody (16:02.809)
All right. Rutger McGroarty is finally gets his wish to leave Winnipeg and he has traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins and in return the Winnipeg Jets get Braden Jaeger and also McGroarty signs a three year ELC contract with the Penguins.
Gary (16:26.796)
Awesome. So for the Nations Face Off, what? Foreignation, yeah. The USA coaches are going to be Mike Sullivan as the head coach. And the assistant coaches will be David Quinn, John Hines, and John Tortorella.
Cody (16:34.161)
Four Nation Face Off. The Four Nation.
Cody (16:53.745)
That's a pretty good coaching lineup. I kind of want to know what the other coaching staffs are going to be too.
Gary (16:56.268)
I would say so. Absolutely.
Gary (17:06.902)
to interesting to find out.
Cody (17:08.591)
Yeah. All right. Philadelphia fliers have placed Ryan Johansson on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination due to a in quotes material breach. I don't know exactly what that means. I'm not going to
Gary (17:25.912)
Does that mean you got a hole in his shirt?
Cody (17:29.153)
I was thinking the same thing when I first read that like, I was like, what was there's like, what I don't get what that means. That's above my pay grade to really know that. So
Gary (17:41.623)
It might be something that they didn't want to actually just shout out.
Cody (17:46.789)
I mean, we still don't technically know why Corey Perry was even let go by the Chicago Blackhawk. So.
Gary (17:53.176)
Yeah, there's all sorts of speculation on what happened there. And. Another bit of news is. As as Kurov signs a two year, two million AV extension with San Jose after being traded there.
Cody (17:55.088)
Yeah.
Cody (18:12.433)
Good bit of news.
Gary (18:15.018)
Yeah, I think they're scary. They're scared. That's scary, though, when you think about what could happen, because I can remember with Edmonton, with all the young people they got, and now finally they made it to the Cup. They had a lot of first round picks on that team. mean, not first, first picks, but first.
Cody (18:17.403)
They're going to be scary in three to four years.
Cody (18:31.494)
Yeah.
Cody (18:39.747)
over yeah, first round picks.
Gary (18:41.75)
Yeah, mean, Dave McDavid was the first pick, but I mean, Tricey was third. Right. Nugent Hopkins was there.
Cody (18:49.75)
He was number one, wasn't he?
Gary (18:51.724)
He might have been. I don't remember where he was at. Of course, then again, he didn't have that bang ear like he had the year before, but they still went with the cup.
Cody (19:01.104)
Yeah.
The AHL Board of Governors has mandated the cut -resistant neck protection for all players on ice on ice officials beginning in the 2024 -2025 season. Which I think is smart.
Gary (19:22.167)
So.
that would be this coming season. absolutely. So are we gonna go right into teams now?
Cody (19:34.993)
All right. So to continue on with our hockey 101, we're going to break down how teams like teams are like roster.
Gary (19:47.296)
roster makeup.
Cody (19:48.709)
roster, yeah, roster makeup, how many players you can have, how you can acquire them. So we're going to start off with the NHL rule book, you know, just explaining like teams pretty much.
All right. You want to do it where I'll read one section and you read the next section.
Gary (20:13.618)
Sure, I gotta get to the players. that which that's five? Okay, I'm ready.
Cody (20:21.393)
Alright, I'll start with the rule number for this. So this is from the NHL rulebook, section two, rule five under teams, 5 .1 eligible players. A team shall be composed of 20 players, 18 skaters, and two goalies who shall be under contract to the club they represent. For the purposes of these playing rules, any reference to players shall refer to both skaters and
goalies. Any reference to a goalie shall mean that the section of the rule is specific to goalies. At the beginning of each game, the manager or coach of each team shall list the players who shall be eligible to play in the game. Not more than 18 skaters and two goalies shall be permitted. One non uniform player shall be permitted on the players bench.
in a coaching capacity. He must be
and indicated on the roster indicated on the roster sheet submitted by the coach to the referee or official score prior to the start of the game. A list of names and numbers of eligible players shall be handed to the official score before the game and no change shall be permitted to the list after the commencement of the game prior to the game. If an official
Gary (21:29.396)
Indicated.
Cody (21:55.841)
on eyes or off eyes notices that a player is in uniform but has not been included on the official game report. The referee shall bring this attention to the offending team so that the necessary correction can be made to the official game report with no penalty assessed.
Gary (22:15.83)
Now, before I get to the second part, I'm just going to say every time he said goalie, the rule book says goalkeeper. You know, but when we talk about.
hockey, they're goalies. I don't know why it says goalkeeper. But when you go to soccer, they're not goalies. They're goalkeepers. So I'm finding this funny that you use goalies because I always got corrected. my son's a goalie. No, dad, I'm a goalkeeper. So. But anyways, just so in our terms, goalkeeper goalie, same thing.
Cody (22:34.981)
I don't know why. That's why I just said goalie just to help.
Gary (23:00.366)
So I'm going to give you in the rule book 5 .2 ineligible player. Only players on the list submitted to the official score before the game may participate in the game. The determining factor when considering whether or not a player is eligible is that the player's name and not necessarily the player's number must be correctly listed by the manager or coach of that team.
So what they're saying is their name is more important than their number. So.
Gary (23:39.406)
Whenever an ineligible player is identified to the referee, the ineligible player will be removed from the game and the club shall not be able to substitute another player from its roster. No additional penalties are to be assessed, but a report of the incident must be submitted to the commissioner. For an ineligible goalkeeper, we'll have to see 5 .3, which Cody will go over in just a minute.
If a goal is scored when an ineligible player is on the ice now, this is stuff. I didn't even know Whether he was involved in the scoring or not. The goal is disallowed I've never seen that happen. I Mean I've never seen it or heard of it happening, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen This only applies to a goal scored at the stoppage of play
Cody (24:23.279)
It's going to be very rare if that ever happens.
Gary (24:35.084)
Whereby the player was deemed to be ineligible all other goals scored previously by the ineligible players team With him on the ice or not shall be allowed. So otherwise if it's not caught right away, know, so say For some reason we have Laferriere Kings have Laferriere on the ice, but he wasn't In the original so he's ineligible and he scores
a goal and then scores the second goal, but at the second goal they figure it out, not the first goal. The first goal will count, the second goal will not count. So.
Gary (25:19.872)
Okay, so I gotta move on and find out where I was at again.
Cody (25:25.443)
and an eligible player will be removed.
Gary (25:29.612)
Yes, you will be removed from the game and the club shall not be able to substitute another player from its roster. No additional penalties are to be assessed, but a report to the commissioner.
Cody (25:31.451)
That's where you need to start.
Gary (25:44.046)
Now, Cody, you want to do 5 .3?
Cody (25:46.897)
Yep. So this is 5 .3 goalkeepers. I'm going to say goalies for short. Each team shall be allowed one goalie on the ice at one time. The goalie shall be removed and another skater substituted. Such
Gary (26:03.646)
may be removed, not shall.
Cody (26:07.591)
yeah, maybe removed and another skater substituted. Such substitute shall be, shall not be permitted. The privileges of the goalie goalie, each team shall have on its bench or on a chair immediately beside the bench or nearby a substitute goalie who shall at all at, at all times be fully equipped and ready to play except when both
goalies are incapacitated. No skater. Huh?
Gary (26:40.928)
incapacitated. It's incapacitated.
Cody (26:44.709)
Yeah, no skater on the plane roster in the game shall be permitted to wear the equipment of the goalie. Which I did not know that.
Gary (26:54.638)
I did not know that either. So we're getting an education 101 just like you guys are.
Cody (26:59.185)
But so usually in this point when you're starting goalie and your backup goalie get hurt, they have something that's called an e -bug and it's also known as an emergency backup goalie. Each team, each home team is required to have a goalie on standby just in case something like this happens. That's why you've seen like the ducks have happened to them a couple of years ago with the Tom Hodges Hodges, honestly, with Dallas.
And that's why you see like the people making fun of Toronto for losing to their own Zamboni driver.
Gary (27:38.009)
I remember that one.
Cody (27:39.225)
Yeah, so like I said, so it's it's it's kind of something cool to see because you even see like the other team like Give props to this goalie if he's making big saves and stuff like that. Like I said, it's it's like a real cool thing to see Afterwards, even though if he's especially playing against his own home team. Usually you'll see the home team like hands. Okay, here's the puck, you know, you got your You got your NHL debut pretty pretty much so they
They kind of make it a special thing and I like it. So in regular league and playoff games, if both listed goalies are incapacitated, that team shall be entitled to dress and play any goalie who is eligible. In the event that the two regular goalies are injured or incapacitated in quick succession, third goalie shall be provoked.
provided with reasonable amount of time to get dressed in addition to a two minute warmup except when he enters the game to defend against a penalty shot. If however, the third goalie is dressed on the bench and on the bench when the second goalie becomes incapacitated, the third goalie shall enter the game immediately and no warmup is permitted. The recalling
of minor league goalie as a result of suspensions incurred to both goalies under rule 11 for goalies equipment to ensure a complete lineup for. Subsequent, thank you. Game shall be deemed to an emergency recall and subject to the. To the 23 man roster limitations, so I'm guessing it's.
Gary (29:18.392)
Subscrp You're welcome.
Cody (29:33.361)
You can have a player like if you can't play, you can recall your age. goalie up real quick and believe that's like your, you can have a 24 man roster for the meantime, just so you can have a fully dressed lineup pretty much.
Gary (29:49.846)
Yeah, so somebody's been suspended or is hurt. They can do.
Cody (29:54.437)
Yeah. So say if Gibson gets hurt last minute or something and they want to recall Tomas Sukenek up. So Gibson is still technically on the roster. But you just call Sukenek up just so you can have an extra goalie for the upcoming game so you can have Dostal and Sukenek playing and Gibson's either hurt or suspended pretty much.
Gary (30:21.41)
Well, he wouldn't be on the roster for that day. The game roster, not the... Yeah, so... Now, coaches and team personnel, five -four. No one but players in uniform, non -playing team personnel, duly registered on the roster sheet as a manager, coach, trainer, equipment manager, et cetera, shall be permitted to occupy the benches so provided. One non -uniform...
Cody (30:24.249)
Yeah, the game roster.
Gary (30:50.786)
Uniformed player shall be permitted on the players bench in a coaching capacity He must be indicated on the roster sheet submitted by the coach to the official score prior to the start of the game so
Cody (31:04.273)
That was so much easier for you to read than me. You had that little paragraph and I had like five paragraphs.
Gary (31:07.127)
Bye.
Gary (31:14.146)
Well, I set it up that way.
Cody (31:15.761)
I don't know. All right, I'll set it up this way. You can take captain.
Gary (31:20.59)
Okay, I'll do captain 6 .1 captain one captain shall be appointed by each team and he alone shall have the privilege of discussing with the referee any questions relating to interpretation of the rules which may arise during the progress of the game. He shall wear the letter C. So Kings you'd see the C it would be on Kopitar right now. I do believe the Ducks it's Fowler. No, they don't have a C do they?
Cody (31:47.715)
We don't have a seat. literally just I literally just talked about this on the Ducks News.
Gary (31:50.627)
That's right. So they would designate, they would have what three A's and they would designate someone to be the speaking person.
Cody (31:54.481)
three days.
Cody (31:58.947)
In that case, yes, it would if there was a 3a situation, it would probably be Fowler.
Gary (32:04.512)
So.
Gary (32:08.814)
He shall wear the letter C. It has to be approximately three inches in height and in a contrasting color in a conspicuous position on the front of the sweater. No co -captains are permitted. Either one captain and no more than two alternate captains or no captain and no more than three alternate captains are permitted. C 6 .2.
Only the captain, when invited to do so by the referee, shall have a privilege of discussing any point relating to the interpretation of rules. Any captain, alternate captain, or any player who comes off the bench and makes any protest of intervention with officials for any purpose shall be assessed a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct under Rule 39, abuse of officials.
Should this protest continue, he may be assessed a misconduct penalty, and if further continues, a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed. A complaint about a penalty is not a matter of relating to the interpretation of the rules, and a minor penalty shall be imposed against any alternate captain or any other player making any such complaint.
The referee and the official scorer shall be advised prior to the start of each game the name of the captain and alternate captains of both teams. No playing coach or playing manager or goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as captain or alternate captain. Are you going to do alternate captain then? you're really going to take the short one this time, huh?
Cody (33:54.257)
Call to alternate captain.
Yep, because I worked it out that way. Alternate captain six point two. If the captain is not on the ice and alternate captain alternate captain on the ice shall be accorded the privileges of captain of the captain alternate captain shall wear the letter A approximately three inches in height.
Gary (34:10.7)
alternate.
Cody (34:27.555)
and in contrasting color in a conspicuous position of the front of their sweaters. Only when the captain is not in uniform or if there is no captain, the coach shall have the right to designate three alternate captains. This must be done prior to the start of the game.
Gary (34:49.198)
Okay, so we finished with captains. Now we're gonna go to rule seven, starting lineup. Prior to the start of the game, at the request of the referee manager or coach of the visiting team is required to name the starting lineup to the referee or official. And we kind of went over that earlier. So.
Cody (34:52.166)
Mm -hmm.
Gary (35:14.318)
to keep reading is no change in the starting lineup of either team as given to the official score or in the playing lineup on the ice can be made unless reviewed and approved by the referee prior to the start of the game. So they can't make any changes after they've officially gave their lineups. So.
Cody (35:40.933)
All right, violation.
Cody (35:47.282)
For infraction of this role, a bench minor penalty shall be imposed upon the offending team. This is an appeal play. must be brought to the referee's attention prior to the second face off in the game. There is no penalty to the requesting team if their appeal is unsustained. The determining factor is the player or goalie's name.
and is not necessarily the player or goalie's number must be correctly listed by the team. In the event a team scores on the first shift of the game and is brought to the attention of the referee by the opposing team that the team that scored did not have the correct starting lineup on the ice. The goal shall be allowed and a bench minor
penalty assessed to the defending team for having an improper starting lineup. If the team that scores a goal on the first shift of the game challenges the starting lineup of the opposing team and the opposing team did not have the correct starting lineup, the scoring of the goal would nullify the bench minor penalty and no further penalties will be assessed.
Cody (37:11.729)
I'm trying to process that one.
Gary (37:14.572)
Well, I'm thinking it's is if if it comes about that they do that and they did have the right starting lineup, there's no penalty assessed. I think that's what that means. So now we're going to go to rule eight and talk about injured players when a player is injured or compelled to leave the ice during the game, he may retire from the game and be replaced by a substitute.
Cody (37:26.939)
Got it.
Okay.
Gary (37:44.664)
But play must continue without the teams leaving the ice. During the play, if an injured player wishes to retire from the ice and be replaced by a substitute, he must do so at the player's bench and not through any other exit leading from the rink. This is not a legal player change and therefore when a violation occurs, a minor bench penalty shall be imposed.
If a penalized player has been injured, he may proceed to the dressing room without taking a seat on the penalty bench. If the injured player receives a minor penalty, the penalized team shall immediately put a substitute player on the penalty bench who shall serve the penalty until such time as the injured player is able to return to the game. He would replace his teammate on the penalty bench at the next stoppage of play.
If the injured player receives a major penalty, the penalized team shall place a substitute player on the penalty bench before the penalty expires and no other replacement for the penalized player shall be permitted to enter the game except from the penalty bench. For violation of this rule, a bench minor penalty shall be imposed.
Wow, this is a lot. Should the in.
Cody (39:03.217)
Do you me to come in at a certain point? Next one.
Gary (39:07.938)
Yeah, why don't you hit, why don't we take a paragraph and we'll just switch paragraphs.
Cody (39:12.977)
Okay. Let me start the next one. Okay. Should the injured penalized player who has been replaced on the penalty bench return to his players bench prior to the expiration of his penalty, he shall not be eligible to play until his penalty has expired. This includes coincidental penalties when his substitute is still in the penalty box awaiting a stoppage in play.
Gary (39:16.908)
Yeah.
Cody (39:43.291)
The injured player must wait until his substitute has been released from the penalty box before he is eligible to play. If however, there is a stoppage of play prior to the expiration of his his penalty, he must then replace his teammate on the penalty bench and is then eligible to return once his penalty has expired. When a player is injured so that he cannot continue play or go to his bench,
The play shall not be stopped until the injured player players team has secured control of the puck. If the players team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position. In the case where it's obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the referee and or the linesman may stop the play immediately.
When play has been stopped by the referee or lines person due to an injured player or whenever an injured player is attended on by the ice by the trainer or medical personnel, such players shall be substituted for for immediately. This injured player cannot return to the ice until play has resumed. When play is stopped for an injured player, then soon say face off shall be conducted at the face off spot.
the zone nearest location of the puck where the play hat was stopped. When the injured player's team has control of the puck in the attacking zone, the face -off shall be conducted at the nearest face -off spot in the neutral zone. When the injured player is in his defending zone and the attacking team is in possession of the puck in the attacking zone, the face -off shall be conducted at the nearest face -off spot in the defending team zone.
Gary (41:41.784)
So now we have injured goalkeeper. If a goalkeeper sustains an injury or becomes ill, he must be ready to resume play immediately or be replaced by a substitute goalkeeper. And no additional time shall be allowed for the purpose of enabling the injured or ill goalkeeper to resume his position. The substitute goalkeeper shall be allowed a two minute warmup during all
preseason games. No warm up shall be permitted for a substitute goalkeeper in a regular league or playoff games. The referee shall report to the commissioner for disciplinary action any delay in making a goalkeeper substitution. The substitute goalkeeper shall be subject to the regular rules governing goalkeepers and shall be entitled to the same privileges.
When the substitution for a regular goalkeeper has been made, such a regular goalkeeper shall not resume his position until the next stoppage of play. For a violation of a rule, a minor penalty might delay a delay of game shall be assessed. When the play has been stopped by the referee or the lines person due to an injured goalkeeper, such goalkeeper must be substituted for only
if he has to proceed to the players bench to receive medical attention. If the trainer has come onto the ice to attend the goalkeeper and there is no undue delay, the goalkeeper may remain in the game. However, no additional time shall be permitted by the referees for the purpose of enabling the injured goalkeeper to resume his position, i .e. no warm -up.
Cody (43:28.369)
All right. And the last bit of for players is eight point three blood. A player who is bleeding or who is or has visible blood on his equipment or body shall be rolled off the ice at the next stoppage of play. Such players shall not be permitted to return to play until the bleeding has been stopped and the cut or abrasion covered if necessary. It is required that
any affected equipment and or uniform to be properly decontaminated or exchanged.
Gary (44:04.174)
So one thing that could happen and it happens to players and now goalkeepers is something happens like their scape blade comes off and you'll see them come off the ice and they won't go back on the ice but that isn't a subject comes in for them because they'll just do the line change. They'll do it during play. They don't stop the game typically for it though. I've seen that happen quite a few times so.
Cody (44:13.595)
Yeah.
Gary (44:33.24)
So now we're going to move on to.
Cody (44:36.601)
how NHL teams are built.
Cody (44:41.563)
So this is, I found this website called the soundofhockey .com.
All right. So there's a few ways to acquire a player.
And I'll go over the first one. The first one is pretty much the You know how normal people usually come into the league is the NHL draft entry draft for those unfamiliar with the NHL entry draft It is the amateur draft that is very similar to all other major sports in North America NHL draft Eligible eligibility. I can't freaking say that Yeah, thank you
Gary (45:22.645)
eligibility.
Cody (45:25.105)
is generally for North American players between the ages of 18 and 20 and for non -American players between the ages of 18 and 21.
Gary (45:37.326)
Yeah, so obviously we just had the draft and we had seven rounds. That's one way to acquire. The next way is free agency. There are three most common ways a player can be a free agent. NHL player contract expires and he does not sign an extension with his current team.
Cody (45:40.197)
Mm -hmm.
Gary (46:03.392)
Therefore enters free agency and can sign with any team. Stephen Stamco, Jonathan Marceso, mean, just for a few. mean, Nashville really hit a home run with two big goal scorers. Just by that rule alone.
Cody (46:10.282)
That's how that was my example too.
Gary (46:29.231)
Another way is a player is not drafted during the year of draft eligibility and therefore becomes a free agent. A player is drafted but does not sign an entry level contract with the owner of his rights before the rights expire. So the rights expire, what is it, three years?
Cody (46:50.865)
Four year is I think it's like after your three or four years after your senior year
Gary (46:56.182)
Okay, here it is. expiration of rights varies by where the player is drafted. From two years from the draft year for junior players, four years for non -American and NCAA players. So you have...
Gary (47:15.34)
both of those that can happen. One would be like Eric Pertillo. He finished college, didn't want to, but they did trade for him. They say he played his fourth year of college, but did not sign with Buffalo. He becomes a free agent. He can go where he wants. I'm trying to think of another player that did that.
Cody (47:17.626)
Yeah.
Cody (47:44.433)
So pretty much like what happened with the ducks with Henry Throne, he finished his last year of eligibility and he told the ducks that he and they college players have a lot of right rights. They kind of can somewhat kind of choose where they want to go sometimes. But Henry Throne told the ducks he's like, hey, at the end of this year, he did it like in advance. At least I give him credit for that. He's a hey.
I'm not going to sign with you guys. So you can either trade me or I'll be a free agent by July 31st or July 1st or whenever his eligibility ends for them to resign him. Cause the, matter what the ducks, he told the dogs, he's like, I'm not signing here. Cause I think he's a left shot defenseman and there was just so much in front of him. He's like, I'd rather just go somewhere else where I have a better chance to get to the NHL quicker.
So I think that that's a good example. All right. Next one is the next player way to acquire is a trade. Pretty self -explanatory, but there this is where a player is acquired in exchange with another team. So pretty much like kind of like what we just saw earlier with the line a trade, the record majority trade, the ask her off trade. You know, those are the best way.
Gary (48:45.101)
Okay.
Cody (49:12.271)
That's all I say free agency and trades is like the most common way.
Gary (49:16.46)
Okay. trade Kings traded Dubois for Kemper. That was a trade. They traded and got Janot for a second and a fourth round pick. They traded or no, they signed Fogel. but trades are a big way that you can either help yourself.
Cody (49:23.419)
Yeah.
Gary (49:45.056)
Rebuild by getting rid of older players that maybe are declining But could still help other teams win Stanley Cups. You see it happen all the time so trades are big and The next way is waivers. The waiver process is a little more complex though This is where a player has met a certain amount of playing experience and his team wants to send that player to the miners or a taxi squad for that season
Cody (50:13.903)
Well, there is no taxi squad anymore, so don't worry about that.
Gary (50:18.551)
In this scenario another team can claim that player to acquire him acquiring players through the waiver process is relatively uncommon But we I can tell you right now the king last season We sent faggy Mo Down and he went into waivers and national token
Cody (50:31.545)
It's more it's getting more common.
Gary (50:45.654)
And then Nashville played him for a little bit and they decided to send him down and he went on waivers and the kinks. He got you in the way the waiver waiver waiver wire works is at the time of that happening. It's on your record, the record. Probably by I would say points percentage is the way they points percentage. So it like San Jose.
Cody (50:45.957)
All right.
Cody (51:05.989)
Mm -hmm.
Cody (51:09.87)
it is points percentage.
Gary (51:15.638)
last year probably would be number one for most of those. But I think once you take somebody, it pulls you out of there.
Cody (51:19.696)
Yeah.
Cody (51:26.041)
I don't remember exactly what to look that up and say for another pop.
Gary (51:28.842)
It doesn't really happen, but it doesn't happen where, you know, one team, you San Jose's taking every guy that comes on because he just can't afford to do that.
Cody (51:39.557)
Yeah.
Gary (51:41.27)
So, but that's the waiver wire.
Cody (51:46.009)
All right. Expansion, which who knows we might be seeing some again sometime soon, maybe. So expansion stating the obvious here, but this is where a player is required in the NHL expansion draft. It's important to call out that players that were acquired as part of the expansion draft via side deal trades are are designated as acquired via trade.
and not expansion draft selections like with the whole of the Vegas Golden Knights. You know, they could have like and I hate that he's this example because I still feel like this is the worst trade in Ducks history. One of them is Shay Theodore, the defenseman for the Vegas Golden Knights, who was a defenseman for the Anaheim Ducks.
Gary (52:30.574)
Absolutely agree with you.
Cody (52:40.645)
Shea Theodore is a good example as he was traded from Anaheim to Vegas on the condition that Vegas would select Clayton Stoner in the expansion draft. In this scenario, Theodore would be acquired via trade while Stoner was acquired via the expansion draft. the Vegas total provincial deducts like, Hey, we're going to take this player who we know you want to keep, but if you don't want us to take him,
We'll take Clayton stone or someone that you probably don't really care about losing, but in return you to give us a Theodore.
Gary (53:17.656)
Yeah, and I do believe that player was Vatanen.
Cody (53:21.361)
I think it was Votnin, I believe. Sandy Votnin. For Henrique.
Gary (53:22.686)
And then they traded Voughton and late. Yeah, a little bit later, maybe when it was that at the trade day in London that next season. But I mean, to me, that was absolutely a great trade by the Vegas Golden Knights. No doubt about it. But it was a great trade. I mean, you look what they did, they made the Stanley Cup in their expansion year. I mean, they were so smart. mean.
Cody (53:31.482)
I think so.
Cody (53:39.823)
You shut your mouth.
I know.
Cody (53:48.974)
I know.
Gary (53:54.442)
They knew how to play it. They knew how to play it. the rules were so liberal. I mean, they weren't quite as liberal with Seattle.
Cody (54:04.561)
Seattle else because everyone learned their lesson from Vegas they didn't they weren't gonna fall for the same thing a second time with Seattle But I mean Seattle still did a pretty good job not as probably good as Vegas obviously But you know Yeah, so I think that's probably why I think Vegas before they even started their expansion draft they bought a I think they bought like what like the cat friendly but back then
I think it was like General Fanager, the website was called so that they knew the exact CBA rules so that they knew they can get away with not get away with, but they can work around the CBA. So it's still legal to acquire these things and kind of manipulate their expansion draft. So, yeah, but I think that's pretty much it. Pretty much ways to acquire players.
Gary (55:03.662)
Well, yeah, building through the draft is a... But you look at the, I mean, the percentage of players that were drafted by their team. Vegas, can you believe it's 5 %?
Cody (55:08.709)
Well, we already talked about the draft, but yeah.
Cody (55:22.897)
Yes, because this is only based on this is based in 2021.
Gary (55:27.598)
but they were only 5 % and this is what.
What was their first year? 2017? So four years later, they still only had 5%. And at that time,
Cody (55:41.531)
That's because they always trade. They always traded their players away.
Gary (55:45.326)
Where were the ducks? The ducks were in the upper third. They were at 50%. Kings were at 55%. And the top team at 2021 of drafting players was the New Jersey Devils at 65%.
Cody (56:00.785)
Yeah, so this is this was based in April of 2021 that this report was saying and then players that were acquired via trade. Let's see. Anaheim was so close to bottom third at 30 percent. Kings were third to last in acquiring players via trade.
Gary (56:08.931)
So.
Gary (56:23.598)
Well, they were tied for second to last with three other teams, Edmonton, Calgary and Philadelphia at 15%.
Cody (56:33.873)
And then the then Kings are about and the free agency they are about 30 % of their.
They're about in the middle. Yeah, and the ducks are metal bottom pretty much
Gary (56:47.438)
in the middle, right in the middle.
Cody (56:56.969)
But all right, you ready to get out of here?
Gary (57:03.326)
yeah, I am and just want to thank you guys for listening one more time. I know this one was a little more. Make you really have to listen. Hopefully you enjoyed it. I learned some stuff I did not know. I mean really, I mean if you break down, I mean being that we were both officials, not not for HL, but for other sports. The rule book man, you gotta know that rule book. So I mean.
Cody (57:12.944)
Yeah.
Cody (57:17.338)
Me too.
Cody (57:30.433)
Mm -hmm. Let's like how Adam said last last week, you know, he would read the rule book and That's how he would talk to the referees
Gary (57:37.869)
then.
Gary (57:41.912)
Well, I can tell you, if you walked up to me in a high school game and go and showed me the rule book, I'm tossing you right there. And I don't know of anybody that wouldn't done that, that knew that that was the, what you were supposed to do. They were not supposed to come at you that way.
Cody (58:02.191)
I had a coach come out at me with his phone showing, trying to show me the rule. And I was like, and I was like, what did I say? I was like, so I'll make, you're right now showing me a rule in the rule book. And he's like, yep. I'm like, all right, you're done. He's like, what? I'm like, yeah, you're he's like, why? I'm like, you're not supposed to bring a rule book out to me like this. I'm like, you're,
Gary (58:27.27)
If anybody wants to know, it's called showing up the official. Even if they're right, showing up the official.
Cody (58:31.067)
Yeah.
Cody (58:36.752)
Mm -hmm.
Gary (58:38.167)
I mean, I have had a quick story. Troy Percival. I had Troy Percival. He was at the Moreno Valley High School, I believe, right? And the play happened where their kid...
Cody (58:43.346)
boy. yeah.
Cody (58:54.319)
Yeah, it was Marino Valley.
Gary (59:03.722)
No, they were playing at Riverside Christian. What's the name of that school? No, the Christian school on Van Buren.
Cody (59:10.906)
Riverside Poly.
Cody (59:17.361)
push in the school off of vamp.
Gary (59:18.25)
I can't remember the name of the school. Anyways, they were up. The ball was hit. It looked like a gapper. I was on the bases. We had first and third one out. The guy catches the ball and the runner from first. Thought it was going to go down. He was five steps from third base when he caught the ball, so he.
and I'm following him. And he went up a step second on bass and by the time he was halfway back to first, they threw the first bass and got the out.
Now
The runner from third waited till the guy caught the ball, then just ran home and scored. And Troy didn't want the run to score. He goes, hey, that's a double play. It was a force out. I go, no, Troy, it was an appeal play. It's an appeal play. It's not like the...
Ground ball shortstop, boom, boom, boom. It's an outfield runner has to get back. So. My partner called it that way. Troy. Had a problem with it. I had him the next week and I told him I'd bring the role. And the funny part about the story is you were there. You came came to me. We had a meeting that night. We were going to go to, so I was working with somebody else and I.
Cody (01:00:47.846)
Yeah.
Gary (01:00:55.554)
went to tell him the role he, what? Yeah, Fred Smith. God rest Fred's soul. What a great guy Fred was. Anyways, when I got there, I went to right over to talk to Troy and he goes, he goes, know something? I couldn't sleep. So I called four different major league umpires. One of them called me back and said, I was right. And he goes, and I went, man, I was ready for you to come after that. But then again,
Cody (01:00:55.825)
with Fred.
Cody (01:01:00.134)
Yeah.
Gary (01:01:25.068)
The next morning he thought about it, called me back and said, no, they called it right. And so he was cool with it. So we got.
Cody (01:01:34.929)
Troy was Troy was always a really relaxed coach like he would not like get mad and he would like but He knew when he messed up and I always respected Troy like he was always really cool one of my favorite coaches to really ever empire for
Gary (01:01:42.478)
Yeah.
Gary (01:01:53.09)
He was, because I also had him in a travel ball game and he went out two times already to this pitcher because they could not... What was that team I really didn't like very much? were really good. Phenom. Phenom. Yeah. And his team was the Swat, I believe. Wasn't it Swat?
Cody (01:02:14.924)
God.
Cody (01:02:21.073)
I think they were a SWAT, yes.
Gary (01:02:23.202)
and he went out twice to talk to the pitcher and then the pitcher did something. He wanted to go talk to him again.
And I go. And they started walking away. I go, so who you bringing in? He goes, nobody. And I go, well, that was your third visit. Second visit of the ending, it was a second visit, I'm sorry. He goes, that was your second visit this inning. You have to take him out. He goes, no, I don't. have three. I go, Troy, I know you coach high school. You can get away with that in high school, but.
Cody (01:02:44.027)
Second visit.
Gary (01:03:00.258)
We're under the MLB rules for this." And he goes, you are? Yes. Yeah, and I know you know the Major League rules for this, right? And he goes, yeah, I guess you're right. Okay. I guess I'll pull him out. I mean, some guys would just start screaming and yelling at you. He was always very cool. Such a nice guy.
Cody (01:03:22.513)
For people that don't know Troy Percival Used to be the closer for the Anaheim Angels. He was the one that threw yeah
Gary (01:03:30.606)
When they won the world's he threw the last pitch they got the out for the World Series Right
Cody (01:03:35.413)
last three outs. He closed out the World Series for the NIM Angels. Also known as Percy Time. I used to love just watching him pitch Percy.
Gary (01:03:40.416)
And erstad
Yeah, incredible guy, nice guy.
